Black Can Benefit From Step Back Up In Trip At Clonmel

Sans Souci Bay broke well at Ascot on Wednesday, but unfortunately that was about as good as it got. He travelled okay until about the 3f pole but once the principals lifted the pace he was soon left behind. The winner looked a class apart and he could still have some juice in his mark even after he is reassessed.

Timothy Doyle is a shrewd dual purpose trainer.

Today I am going to chance one at a big enough price each way in the 10f handicap at 7pm at Clonmel and I think Dressednblack is a fascinating contender for Tim Doyle with talented claimer Ben Coen taking off a valuable 7lb. This 5yo daughter of Elusive Pimpernel has been expensive to follow so far and she remains a maiden after a dozen starts.

However, this mare has shown ability on more than one occasion, including when a decent 5th staying on nicely behind a very well handicapped winner at Cork on her seasonal reappearance a couple of weeks ago (7f hvy). Given that she was likely to have needed the outing from a fitness perspective it was a fine run over a trip that I believe is too sharp for her.

She first caught my eye a year ago when running a stormer at Killarney over a mile on yielding ground. She was pushed along to make her effort 3f out but she found herself in behind a wall of horses around 2f out and Chris Hayes had to momentarily stop riding and switch her wide. She stayed on strongly in the closing stages and just failed to get up for 3rd.

That effort suggested to me that she was worth a crack over further but when Doyle did eventually try her over 9.5f at Gowran on her final start of last season the ground was good. Even though she is bred for good ground she has never run well on it, and all her best form has come on yielding or softer.

She did have three runs over 12f and three over 10f as a 3yo and she wasn’t disgraced on her handicap debut over 12f at Naas when 7th of 12, staying on well from 3f out to 1f out before weakening in the closing stages. That effort came off an opening mark of 57 and she races off a 12lb lower rating now.

Ben Coen’s 7lb claim means she will carry just 8st 4lbs today and on the heavy ground at Clonmel that could prove to be a massive help. She has been handed a nice draw in stall 3 and if she gets the rub of the green and a clear passage today I think she is capable of running a big race. At odds of 18/1 with 4 places for each way terms widely available she is worth chancing each way for small stakes.
