The rain did for Taws' chances in the opener on Day 2 though
he still ran a very nice race to grab 4th. Quite a few bookies were paying 4
places so hopefully you got paid. Galactic Prince travelled into the race very
well and looked a big threat 2f out but he couldn’t go through with his effort.
Invincible Army ran a cracking race to finish 2nd behind Havana Gold who
surprised me as I thought he had no chance on the ground.
Churchill was a late non runner in the Sussex and the race
was won by soft ground specialist Here Comes When. Ribchester ran a strange
race, losing his place a furlong out before staying on strongly again in the
closing stages. Indulged was probably given too much to do by George Wood but
he kept on well for 3rd. Medburn Dream was prominent early but visibility was poor and when they came back into view he was nowhere to be seen. Below are my thoughts on Day 3.

RACE 1
After the relentless rain at Goodwood on Wednesday the ground
is going to be very testing. Soft ground form is thin on the ground in this
race, so the best strategy is to look for one that is bred to handle it. One
horse that has a pedigree that suggests he will handle the conditions is the Mark
Johnston trained Morning Suit. This 3yo son of Street Cry has run well on good
to soft, chasing home Examiner at Salisbury off 88, and he races off the same mark
here.
He has yet to encounter conditions as testing as what it
will be here but I think there is every chance that he will handle the ground.
He is closely related to a horse called Sadma and he loves to get his toe in.
Morning Suit is also stepping up in trip on Thursday and that is another
positive on breeding as there is no shortage of stamina on the dam side of his
pedigree. PJ McDonald is a quality pilot, Mark Johnston hit form with a
vengeance on Day 2 and from a good draw Morning Suit is the e/w suggestion at
odds of 33/1.

RACE 2
The Group 3 Lillie Langtry sees 12 talented fillies and
mares go to post and the one I like at a nice e/w price is the Ralph Beckett
trained Diamonds Pour Moi. This 4yo filly was a very impressive Listed winner
on bottomless ground at Saint Cloud last season (12.5f hvy) and the way she
stayed on that day suggests that today’s trip of 14f should be well within her
capabilities.
This beautifully bred daughter of Pour Moi is out of a
Fantastic Light mare and her half sister Double Diamond won on soft and has
strong placed form on heavy. David Probert takes the ride and he has a win and
5 top 4 finishes when riding for Ralph Beckett. Diamonds Pour Moi ran poorly on
good ground last time at Chester, but back on testing ground she should go well
and she is the each way selection at odds of 14/1.

RACE 3
Eight horses are due to go to post for the Group 2 Richmond
Stakes and Cardsharp is the market leader for the in form Mark Johnston stable.
He handled good to soft ground well at Beverley back in June and he looked a
high class colt last time at Newmarket. However, at a much bigger price I think
Green Power is an interesting contender for John Gallagher and Ben Curtis.
This 2yo son of Kheleyf has run cracking races on his last
two starts and his best effort came on soft at Newmarket. He beat Raydiance by
a neck that day and that horse has gone on to frank the form by winning his
next two, including a gutsy win in a Listed heat last time. Last time he just
missed out by a short head trying to concede 6lb to Staxton, and the third home
that day went on to win next time out. He has a fair chunk to find on the
figures, but soft ground could be the key to him and at odds of 25/1 he is
worth chancing each way.

RACE 4

RACE 5
This 7f nursery looks a tricky puzzle to solve, but one
horse that looks marginally overpriced is the Richard Fahey trained Jedi
Master. This 2yo son of Red Jazz has form figures of 211 when there has been
soft in the ground description and he looks sure to relish the underfoot
conditions at Goodwood on Thursday.
He wasn’t beaten far at all on his handicap debut in a decent
race at York last week (6f gd) and the way he finished the race off suggests
that 7f should suit. His dam won over the trip and there is plenty of stamina
in his pedigree. Adam McNamara takes off a valuable 3lb and with trip and especially
ground to suit Jedi Master could reward each way support at odds of 12/1.

RACE 6
No bet for me in this tricky looking 2yo maiden.
RACE 7
The one I like at a nice price in this 3yo 5f contest is Poet’s
Society for Will Buick and on fire trainer Mark Johnston. This son of Poet’s
Voice needs to bounce back from a couple of below par efforts on his last two
starts, but the quick ground at Newmarket and Pontefract last time can be
viewed as a plausible excuse.
He has run well the last couple of times he has encountered
ground with soft in the description, going close behind Megan Lily at Chester and
winning on good to soft at Newmarket. His yard is flying, he will be ridden by
a top class jockey and off a mark of 88 he could go close from a decent draw in
stall 7.
