Seskinane is a horse I have been keeping an eye on ever since he finished third to Don Poli and Goonyella over 3m in a grade 3 novice hurdle back in February of last year. He was rated as high as 133 after going down by just three lengths to another useful type in Rule The World at Sligo on his previous run.
He made his handicap debut when finishing in midfield in a 3m hurdle race at Leopardstown and that effort came off a mark of 126. He was given a little break after that run, and reappeared at Fairyhouse in April, running an excellect race in 5th behind I Shot The Sheriff. That was over 22F on soft ground, and he was dropped in trip for his next outing, over 20F at Punchestown on good/yielding ground. That test was never likely to suit, and he ran accordingly, finishing in midfield. It was the same story over 19.5F, again on good ground, last time out at Kilbeggan when he finished even further behind.
However, the good ground was never going to suit, and nor was the trip, but it looks as though it was worth running him as the handicapper has relentied and he finds himself off a mark of just 119 today, with his useful claiming jockey, who has ridden plenty of winners, taking off another seven pounds.
The rain has come overnight, he is back up to a more suitable trip, and his trainer Brian McMahon has already had a winner at the festival this week. At his current odds of 22/1 he looks worth a little each way support.
Selection: Seskinane (22/1) e/w.
