Derek Shaw is a trainer that regular readers of the blog should be familiar with, as I have tipped up a couple of his, including stable star Top Boy, here recently enough. He has a decent record at Chelmsford, six winners from forty runners and +£14.75 to a £1 stake.
He sends Extreme Supreme back for his third crack over course and distance tonight, and there is cause for optimism regarding his chances. He has been best at Southwell so far in his short career, but his first run over course and distance was not devoid of promise, particularly considering the race was not run to suit. This horse is best coming home off a very strong pace, and he is almost guaranteed that tonight with a number of front runners in the field.
He is back down to a mark of 70, a pound below the mark he was last placed off at Southwell at the turn of the year. His last run wasn't great, but he was poorly placed throughout, and it was probably needed after a three month break. He has been given a fortnight to get over those exertions, and he should be fit and ready for tonight.
Hopefully the likes of the favourite Elis Eliz, Bertie Blu Boy and Desert Strike all go hard up front early doors, and Extreme Supreme sits on their tails a couple of lengths off them. With any luck the front runners will cut eachother's throats, and the Shaw inmate can pick up the pieces and flash past late on. At his current odds of 11/1 he looks overpriced, and with only seven runners in the field perhaps a small win bet is the order of the day.
Selection: 9.20 Chelmsford Extreme Supreme (11/1)
